Wood Slabs, Cost, and What to be Aware of

The use of wood in building houses and other structures cannot be discounted. While the advancements in technology have caused several other building materials more durable and more practical than wood to crop up, there are still many people who prefer to build their houses with wooden elements. After all, who can resist the rich brown elegance of mahogany or the comforting chocolate hue of maple? Wood has a warm but sophisticated quality to it that gives it an almost nostalgic feel – taking us back to long-forgotten memories of weekends at our grandparents’ ancestral home or vacations at the family’s old log cabin.

What are Wood Slabs?

Wood slabs are, obviously, pieces of wood cut from a big tree (e.g. a maple tree) to form planks or ‘slabs’ that can be used for several purposes, one of which is for flooring. Yes, wood slabs are extremely popular materials for the flooring of a house. However, some people are highly against the thought of using wood for a house because it poses a risk for fire and corrodes faster than some of the other construction materials that are available on the market today. Also, wooden floors are relatively hard to maintain. Unlike marble floors which could do for weeks with just a little bit of sweeping, wooden floors actually have to be waxed and polished to make them look good and to keep them in top shape, not to mention the fact that you have to be extra careful around wood since it’s highly porous and stains a lot (even water can cause stains in the case of wood!).

But seriously, even though using wood poses a lot of disadvantages in terms of safety and durability, you have to admit that wood looks gorgeous. And this elegant warmth of wood is more than enough to make all the effort we put into maintenance well worth it. Wood is classy and timeless and looks great on any home. Besides, there are ways to get around the disadvantages. Wood can be reinforced with concrete so that it will be able to hold all the weight without getting damaged. And with constant vigilance, you can still be able to preserve your floors just as some of the oldest houses in the country have.

But back to the description of wood slabs, wood slabs are usually 3/4” thick, but you can have them cut to your own liking if you contact the company. The most commonly used materials for wood slabs include red oak, white oak, ash, yew, and maple. Cherry wood may also be used, but they’re relatively rare and quite expensive because of their advanced age.

The Cost of Wood Slabs

Wood slabs, despite their disadvantages, are priced rather expensively. Wood is now more of a luxury than a necessity because there is now such a thing as illegal logging. They may cost you $20 a piece, but it really depends more on the wood used.
