It is common to find segregation occurring while trucks move the material to the site caused by thermal changes. The effect of such segregation makes it harder for asphalt to be made more compact. Stockpiling the material at the quarry is also an important factor to prevent segregation which is why the person manning the heavy equipment should be aware of this process as well. Cold feed bins should be used appropriately to eliminate segregation while it is being processed, too. When loading the contents on the truck on the site, it would be good to have a knowledgeable crew dump one load from both ends with a third in the middle doing the same to control segregation. As for the hopper, keeping it full will ensure proper volume of asphalt is added to its screed end for accurate auger length. You see all equipment, if used correctly, will create a long lasting paving construction.
