You’ve probably seen natural stone tiles on other people’s floors and have observed how pretty and timeless they look. You’re probably thinking of tiling your house with natural stones as well, but you haven’t decided yet. If this is the case, then you should know the advantages and disadvantages of having natural stone flooring. In order to do so, you must first know the different types of natural stone tiles.

Slate tiles – These are not likely to stain but are pretty vulnerable to watermarking. If resin makes contact with slate tiles, you could have a problem so make sure you quickly clean up spills. If you bought slate tiles that have a riven face, you would have to fix these differently. The tile face won’t be perfectly flat, so you must lay them in such a way that the unevenness looks pretty. Of course, the irregularity of natural materials is usually its number 1 appeal, so don’t worry too much about uneven installation.

Granite tiles – In general, granites are really tough and are not prone to breaking. You can treat granite tiles as you would ceramic tiles. However, when using granite tiles, make sure you coat the back thoroughly with adhesive to prevent it from getting loose. The only problem with using too much adhesive is that a slight stain may result.

Marble tiles – If you choose to buy marble tiles, get those that have a fine-rubbed finish. These are better than acid-polished tiles which may look better at first, but won’t be able to maintain the sheen in the long run.

Limestone tiles – Limestone tiles can be treated like marble tiles, but you must remember that they are more absorbent. They can mark really easily while being installed, so make sure that the edges won’t have adhesive or sealant to prevent unsightly markings.

Though special handling and additional care is required when using natural stones, remember that they are worth the extra effort because they can last for very long time and they never go out of style.
