The moment you enter the premises of any building, whether it’s a house or a skyscraper, look down. You will probably see…the floor. Before you throw rotten tomatoes at me for stating the painfully obvious, hear me out first. You see, there is a lot that you can tell about a person or a company based on their choice of flooring. Just look at the slabs they used, and you’ll instantly have an idea of what their personalities, their values, and their ideals are.

Granite Slabs

Granite slabs are simply slabs made out of granite, whether it’s natural or synthetic. People who use granite slabs are generally no-nonsense people who have a penchant for simple elegance. You see, granite slabs give off an elegant vibe that makes them great materials for flooring. Not just that, granite slabs are also very durable and long-lasting.

Marble Slabs

Anything that’s made of pure marble is beautiful, thereby inviting awe from almost everyone. So, if you see a person whose home or company has marble flooring, expect that that person is rich and is out to impress. The person might also have a thing for extravagant beauty. Let’s face it. Anyone who is perfectly willing to spend a considerable amount of money on marble slabs must place beauty and aesthetics at a high value. But that’s not to say that the only thing that’s good about marble is its impressiveness and its beauty. On the contrary, marble slabs are also very hard and therefore very durable. They do not crack easily, even after countless earthquakes.

Concrete Slabs

People who use concrete slabs for their homes or their companies are generally practical people who place little emphasis on outside appearances. But that’s not to say that concrete slabs do not look beautiful. Actually, if applied properly, concrete slabs can be made to look elegant and austere in a sleek industrial manner. What’s so great about concrete slabs is that they’re great materials for foundations.

Wood Slabs

When anyone sees wooden slabs, the first thing that would probably come to their mind is ‘nature.’ Wooden slabs are rarely seen in the flooring of skyscrapers or any other big buildings, but they’re relatively common in the domestic setting (i.e. the home). Wooden slabs generally speak of a love for the simple things in life. However, wooden slabs are also quite hard to maintain, so whoever chooses them over the other materials probably has a lot of patience.

So, whenever you enter an establishment, look down and analyze the floor the way a psychiatrist might, or you could simply admire the slabs for what they are – beautiful.

Aesthetics is something that is central to any person’s life. People intrinsically want to be surrounded by beauty of high degrees. They especially don’t want anything associated with them to be considered as ‘unpleasant’ or, simply put, ugly. So, humans, beauty-obsessed as they are, spend considerable amounts of time on beautifying their surroundings as much as they can – creating mini-Edens within their own homes.

To achieve this – to make a garden look like a mini paradise – landscape pavers could be used.

What are Landscape Pavers?

Landscape pavers are simply paving tiles manufactured especially for outdoor landscaping projects. These landscape pavers not only come in different sizes and shapes but also in different colors.

Where can You Use these Landscape Pavers?

These landscape pavers can be used anywhere outside your home, whether it’s your pool or your garden. With a little creativity and maybe some help from a professional landscaper, you can create a beautiful scenery right outside your own home. There are landscape pavers that are especially cut and colored to look like the stone floors of the medieval castles and the Victorian townhouses. So, if you’re into houses that look like they’ve endured century after century of history, then these paving stones are great for you.

You could also use these landscape pavers to make a path through your garden. Whether it’s a traditional one with a patio and several flowers or a Japanese one with minimalist designs, these landscape pavers would look great. Not only that, they will also protect your plants from trampling feet which do not know where and where not to step. There are also pavers which are spaced farther apart to allow the grass to grow through them so that they will not detract from the ‘natural’ look. You might be wondering why people would want to use pavers in the first place if they’re going for the natural look. Well, the reason is actually ‘functional’ rather than ‘aesthetic.’ These pavers help prevent and control soil erosion, thereby making sure that your surroundings will be safe from being destroyed easily by heavy rains.

You can’t go wrong with these landscaping pavers. What’s so great about these pavers is that they are especially made to blend in with outdoor landscapes around the home. They fit in seamlessly with the background, making the whole place look picturesque. Indeed, lawns where landscaping pavers are installed look like they’ve been ripped out of a beautiful painting.

Have you ever dreamed about living in a beautiful medieval castle with its high walls and cobblestone floors? Well, let me disappoint you. Unless you’re a super billionaire, you can’t build your own castle in the suburbs. You can, however, come close. While you can’t exactly build towers and parapets and sky-high walls, you can have your cobblestone floors. But then again, even cobblestone floors can cost you more money than you care to spend. So what’s the solution? Simple! Use imitations!

So, how do you imitate the cobblestone floors of yonder years? That’s simple, too. Use interlocking pavers!

How do You Use Interlocking Pavers?

Interlocking pavers are tiles that are made from concrete. They fit together seamlessly to cover whichever part of your home you deem it fit to cover like your pathway, your driveway, your deck, your patio, or even you poolside. They do a great job at beautifying your home and making it look like – or as close as it can get to looking like – the castle in your dreams.

What’s so fantastic about interlocking pavers is that they offer you a wide range of options. They come in various shapes, sizes, and colors, so you’ll never have a problem with finding the right one for your home. They can be made to look like bricks, stones, granites, or whatever other building material you could think of. The various designs offered in the market today are sure to fit your needs and your wallet’s capacity.

How do You Install These Interlocking Pavers?

Installation of interlocking pavers is relatively simple. This is actually one of the things that make these interlocking pavers so fantastic. You see, you can install these pavers by yourself. You only have to dig 5 to 10 centimeters of the soil wherein you will lay your pavers, add a thin layer of gravel and a thick level of sand over the place where you dug, and then start laying the interlocking pavers. After laying down the pavers, you won’t need to connect them using grout. You only have to fill the cracks with sand to keep the tiles in their places. After this, you have to use a special tool called a ‘vibrator’ to shake the sand until they are perfectly compact.

This simple way of installation allows more durability for the new paved flooring you’ve created because the structure allows for movement during earthquakes, thereby ensuring that there won’t be any cracks.

If you want to add some additional protection to your interlocking pavers, you only have to use a sealer.

Indeed, these interlocking pavers are amazing. They’re durable, they’re flexible, and they can make your home look like a castle.

Have you ever looked at your neighbor’s beautifully paved patio in a mixture of awe and resentment? Admit it! You’ve dismissed pavers as ‘impractical and totally unnecessary’ but secretly wished that you had enough money to hire that professional paving contractor whose ads you always see on TV. Well, don’t fret. Everyone has those moments. We’ve all felt like that at least once in our lives. The good news is, now we can do something about it.

Technology’s Help

Gone are the days of being totally dependent. With the advent of our ‘window to the world,’ a.k.a., the internet, we now have access to the secrets of the professional paving contractors. Of course, you could have just bought a book from your local bookstore, but hey, the internet’s a lot cheaper!

Paving 101

Here’s a short step by step process about laying pavers:

Plan your layout – You can’t just grab a pile of bricks and start laying them down on your lawn randomly. No, you have to plan the whole thing before you start. You have to think about where your path will start and where it will end and how it will look like. You will have to keep this plan in mind as you work.

Excavate the area – After that you have to excavate the area where you will have your walkway. It should be about 7-11 inches deep. Make sure that you give an allowance of about 12 inches on both sides.

Lay down the gravel – After excavating the area, lay out the processed gravel or the crushed stone to form the base of your walkway. The base should be 3-1/2 inches from the edge of your excavated pit. Don’t forget to put a slope in to allow for water drainage.

Secure the area – Secure the area by surrounding it with plastic, aluminum, or steel edge restraints. You can keep this in place by driving 12-inch spikes at intervals around the perimeter.

Pour sand – Next, you have to pour sand in between the cracks and crevices of the foundation you just laid down. Pour the sand until the sand covers most of the base and smooth with a board.

Lay the pavers – Finally, lay the pavers down on your walkway.

Bring in the special equipments – After all of that, secure the pavers by using a plate compactors. Sweep all the sand into the cracks again and compact.

Use a sealer – This is actually optional, but this will be good for your pavement. It will help you maintain your walkway in good shape.

There is little to no doubt about the ability of the pavers to beautify your home. But there is, however, a question about their practicality. Most people are under the impression that these pavers cost exorbitantly high prices and therefore avoid even thinking about installing them in their homes. But for the people who are adamant at making their homes look beautiful, pavers are too good to pass up. There are actually ways for you to wheedle out of the exorbitant prices, but for that, you need to know the basics.

Materials

The most major thing that you have to spend money on when you decide to install pavers is the pavers themselves. Pavers come in many different materials. These are concrete, brick, and stone.

Concrete pavers are currently one of the most popular choices of people. This popularity is mainly due to the flexibility of concrete. These concrete pavers can cost you about two to five dollars per square foot. But that’s a good price for something that you can work with easily. Concrete pavers come at a multitude of shapes and sizes and even colors, so you can certainly find one that suits whatever design you’ve conjured up in your head.

Brick pavers, on the other hand, can cost you up to fifteen dollars per square foot. But the price, despite its being higher than that of concrete pavers, is quite reasonable. Bricks are extremely durable, so you won’t ever have to worry about your pavement not lasting long. They can last for so many years - centuries, even! Also, what’s great about brick pavers is that they give off a classic and elegant look that’s sure to make your house a lot more beautiful than it already is.

Stone pavers are arguably the most expensive materials available. This is because they are much harder to come by than bricks and concrete. Whereas bricks and concrete can be manufactured, stone pavers can only be made by cutting up and slicing the quarry stones into precise pieces. These stone slabs can cost you up to 30 dollars per square foot, but if you’re adamant at getting these stones, then they’ll surely be worth it.

Installation

But the cost of the materials isn’t the only cost that you will have to cover. There’s also the cost of installation. If you’re particularly talented at landscaping and are especially patient, you can actually lay these pavers out yourself and save yourself a hefty amount of money. But for almost everyone else, professional help is the only way to go. The price varies, depending on the company and the difficulty of the installation.

Also, you’ll have to consider the maintenance costs. There are some pavers that, though cheap at first, will cost you a lot in maintenance, like cement, for example. Cement cracks in high temperatures and are quite difficult to clean when stained.

If you’ve ever scanned one of those homes and lifestyle magazines, you’ve probably seen those beautiful Victorian homes with their equally beautiful lawns. And few people could look at those homes and not wish that their own homes were just as beautiful. Well, what if I told you that the secret to making your own home worthy of being featured in one of those home and lifestyle magazines was right under your nose, or rather, your feet?

Pavers Defined

Pavers, as the name implies, are the paved walkways, driveways, pool sides, etc. that can be found in most high-end homes. Some homes limit their pavers to just a portion of their lawn like the walkway or that area around the fountain, but others like the pavement to encompass more than half of their lawns. Personally, I prefer the pavers to just cover the quintessential parts of the lawn. But hey, to each his own, right?

Some people like to place pavers on their walkways, leading right to their front doors, while others like to include the driveways leading to the garage. Still, there are some people like to pave the perimeter of their pools and even their whole homes. Some people also like to beautify their gardens by adding quaint paved walkways that lead through the maze of flowers and shrubs.

Types of Pavers

There are several materials that you can use for your pavers. Some people like to go with a classic look and choose bricks for their pavers, while some people like to go with a fresh ‘natural’ look and go with stones or little pebbles. Still, there are other who want to go with a modern or contemporary look, and for this, concrete pavers are the best. There are several other paving materials such as gravel, limestones, and slates.

Installation of Pavers

These pavers look astounding and are perfect additions to your homes, but they aren’t exactly easy to install. Sure, the whole installation may look like a simple process of laying down stones or bricks, but there’s really more to paving than that.

Paving is a painstaking process wherein you’ll have to lay down each piece one by one. But the difficulty does not end there. If done incorrectly, your pavers could fall apart in a matter of months. You see, the type of pavers that you can actually use depends on the type of soil you have. If your soil is loose and sandy, the pavers might not hold properly.

So, sometimes, while it may be cheaper to just do things yourself, it may be a lot better to just hire a professional paver.

You must be planning to make some repairs in the house since it’s been decades since it has been renovated from the inside out. How wonderful it would be to relive its former beauty and view the picture from the outside. Cracks on the concrete walls, driveways, porches, patios obviously need repair. Repairing them with the same material will need some introduction on concrete uses to understand better how to tackle this task, especially if you intend to do it yourself.

Kinds of Repairs and Costs

If you happen to be a do-it-yourself enthusiast, you will find yourself fairly capable of repairing small concrete repair tasks around the house. But it would be best to leave heavy concrete repairs in the hands of the experts since they have more experience and equipment to finish the job to your satisfaction. There’s no sense in scrimping on cost when you will eventually need to redo all the concrete repairs within a short span of time.

The cost is proportionally dependent on the complexity of the job and the amount of work required to do the repairs. Note, too, that different resins and varying grades of concrete may be purchased according to your budget. Since materials react negatively to colder temperatures, you will need a concrete mix that could withstand the low temperature better.

Cost will also hinge on the kind of concrete repair you agreed to do. It could be simple restoration, some reinforcement or just finishing and maintenance. When starting concrete repairs, the area will need to be cleaned and prepared with the use of chemical solutions. Afterwards, removal and leveling of the portion to be repaired will take place before laying down the concrete layer and finishing it.

Setting Time for Concrete Repairs

Be prepared to be inconvenienced by concrete repair of your driveway. You will be made aware that after the concrete repair has been completed, expect instructions to not walk on it until after one to two days after. That’s just for walking on it, so if you’re planning to park your car on the newly-paved driveway, you need to wait a minimum of six days. You wouldn’t want to ruin the new repairs, I’m sure.

Considering the financials and time involved with concrete repairs, you might back out of your plans. Tell you what, you need to do this anyway sooner or later, so the sooner you get this done, the better.

Concrete is decidedly a strong, durable material that has been in use for building establishments and paving constructions. It is no wonder that concrete is the material of choice which spells wise investment a professional concrete contractor will be proud to present to customers. But the project of paving driveways and roads are not as easy as you think, which is why you need to choose the contractor who can do it for you.

Desirable Characteristics of Concrete Contractor

When we speak of professionalism from a concrete contractor, you want a person who knows what he’s talking about. If you have a person who can speak to you at a level you can readily understand and answer your questions in simple terms, you have a professional contractor right there. You will come across some contractors who seem to have little patience to explain the paving or repair process to you, then do not waste your time trying to understand them. If you can’t speak to this contractor and come to an agreement with him at the onset, there is very little chance that you will get to do that once the project has gone under way. Talk also about the contractor’s previous projects. Previous works certainly becomes a deciding factor when employing the services of a concrete contractor to do the job.

You know that this is not going to be an easy task. At best, you can help get a good concrete contractor through the help of family members and friends. You will find most of them more than willing to share their experiences with individual contractors, regardless if it was good one or not. Internet search engines will also show you more choices in addition to business directories.

Contract Specifications

After you have zeroed in on the contractor fit to do the job, it is imperative that you tell the concrete contractor exactly what you expect to be accomplished with the project and put them on paper. Get to understand as well if he has policies pertaining to warranties. Make sure to specify if cracks are acceptable to you or what finish do you want to see with the project. It is helpful to remember to let the contractor purchase the concrete he will use for the project. This way, he won’t be able to attribute any failures to inferior materials you purchased during the repair or paving construction. A contract helps you get what you agreed upon in the first place.

Yes, contractors can be the ultimate answer for all your paving needs. Unfortunately, they can easily become unanswered prayers. Contractors tend to work on limited number of days, because there are certain climactic needed to pave roads, driveways, gardens without sacrificing its quality. So if you find yourself burdened with problems regarding the price or the schedule of your favored contractor, you can settle for other options to do that paving job.

The Do-It-Yourself Shops

Some residential paving jobs are so small and simple that paving companies tend to be less interested on them. Luckily, these small projects can be handled by the household and could be built using simple tools and other equipments that can be rented in local workshops. With simple theories on carpentry and other skills, you can undertake a paving project with the entire family

If you want to take control of the pace and the design of your paving project, you can opt to go to DIY companies to help you design your own garden or walkway. If you don’t mind flexing some muscles or you want to save money on fees and other contractor surcharges, you can buy yourself a DIY guide to paving and start transforming that lifeless lawn to some garden your family could enjoy. You need not worry because the engineering who oversees the call is the machinist who fashion the tiles, who is also the one who mixes concrete and lay brick. Plus, he’s working for free. No need to get paranoid over hyped prices because you can select your own materials and buy from your favored store.

The Local Carpentry Man

Simple paving project can turn into amazing works of art if you forge effective project management with expertise. Instead of doing your project without any prior experience, you can seek help of the local man to help you buy the needed materials, produce the needed equipment, prepare your ground, lay your slab, and do finishing touches on your project. If your project is not too big, the local man can save you a lot of money in terms of contractor’s fees, and if he’s familiar with your preference, he could let you have the garden, patio, or driveway you wanted.

The Local Company

You do not have to get the biggest companies for all your paving needs, sometimes its better to choose local companies with established reputation on certain paving needs. Small paving companies may have smaller network of manpower compared to paving contractors and you may have to do some task like buying materials or preparing the ground, but they charge a lot less than bigger contractors. They also have a fair knowledge of local lifestyle, climate and ground characteristics so more or less local companies can help you in choosing the materials and the specifications that can help you put more value on your money.
