A number of people might tell you that even if you are a struggling entrepreneur or a well-established construction company, construction leads, are hard to come by without churning out some dollars. However, with the advent of the internet, looking for such can be easier and less costly.

Your first choice would of course be the free sites that provide leads. There are some that lists directories of builders or home owners that advertise their need for contractors. These sites might not necessarily be construction-related sites. You can also find some in trade and “buy and sell” sites that include services in their menu of products. Of course, since they are free, you do not get guaranteed information from these sites. However, this could give you a good lead to start digging deeper.

Another good idea is to post your qualifications and services information in free sites that allow you to do so, among them is the You Tube. You might also want to post pictures or short videos of your previous projects and your company’s profile to add a more convincing power to your posts. Put in short catchy phrases and make sure that you reflect the correct contact information. Since most of those who search through the internet prefer to communicate via e-mail, be sure to put your correct e-mail address in the ad. If you are lucky, you might get a mail from a potential client. But chances are there is also a great likelihood that your video won’t get any attention and you get an empty mail box time and again.

If you are inclined to write, you can also write an informative article on construction and do it yourself home projects and submit it to your local newspaper. These publishing units are always hungry for articles to fill their pages. At the end of the article, write your name, contact information and a short introduction of your construction firm or your profession. There are almost always new constructions planned in any neighborhood.

No matter how small in most cases, it could be a good way of building your track record in your area. Just make sure that you give the right information and appear to be an authority on your subject matter. The newspaper company might just publish it to fill gaps in their pages, but you can’t always fool the reader.

Do you remember that song that we used to sing back in kindergarten? You know, the one that goes ‘The foolish man built his house upon the sand…” Well, we all know how that went for him. Yes, his whole house toppled down. The wise man’s house was a lot better. He did build it on the rocky parts, and it was able to withstand the storm. But I doubt his house looked good. How could it have looked good if he had to adjust its form to the rock’s shape and form? No, I don’t think he could have made it look good no matter how hard he tried. The rock would not bend to suit him, so it was he who had to bend to suit the rock.

Man’s and Technology’s Advancement

But, hey, hundreds of years have probably passed since the time of the wise man and the foolish man. And in those years, man has gone from ‘wise’ to ‘wiser’ to ‘little high school children who do Integral Calculus like it was simple Arithmetic.’ And because of man’s vast improvement, he has been able to find a way to build houses on strong foundations without compromising design or beauty. How did he do it? Simple, by building concrete slabs.

Steps in Making Concrete Slabs

But how do you make concrete slabs? Well, here’s a step by step explanation.

But before that, though, let me emphasize that it would be better to let a professional handle this. The house’s foundation is a very important thing. If it’s not strong, the house will not hold. And even if you did save some money by not hiring a professional engineer, if you mess up and your whole house crumbles down a few years later, the money you saved will become inconsequential compared to your loss – be it money or, worse, a loved-one’s life.

Imagine the base of your house and mark the corners of your house with stakes. For this, it would be better to have a surveyor do this, or you might not make straight lines with perfect 90 degree angles.

Dig up the soil so that you can lay the foundation. Or better yet, call an excavator and have him dig up the soil for you. Also, you could call up the electrician and the plumber, so that they can do the things necessary to accommodate these essential connections.

If the soil that was excavated was not of good quality, you may have to buy new soil that’s best for foundations from a quarrying company.

Connect the stakes by making a mold using wooden planks.

Pour the concrete into your mold and wait for it to dry.

Once done, the mold will be removed and you will finally have the foundation of your home completed.

If you need professional work done in your home, you would probably look for a company or vendor that offers construction services. These are companies that build office buildings, shopping centers, residential homes, sports complexes, hospitals, schools and hotels.

Construction work is not an easy task – it starts with visualizing a concept and then doing the nitty-gritty to translate the concept into reality. The end result should be both innovative and brilliantly engineered.

Any construction project requires a huge capital to start with, and also requires a lot of time and effort during the entire process. To make things more complicated, there are legal aspects to consider during the construction process, such as getting building permits. A good construction service company will help you through everything.

Once you hire a construction services company, you will need to sign a construction agreement or contract where it is clearly stated that they will furnish the labor, equipment, supplies and everything necessary in order to complete the construction of your house. The agreement may vary in some aspects in different states since there are local governing laws in each area. Make sure that the contract is compliant to the relevant environmental standards, regulatory requirements and legal employment practices. In addition, safety regulations must be strictly adhered to in the construction industry, since there is significant occupational risk.

In order to implement a good construction project, you will need to devote a lot of time and effort from the conceptualization to the final touches. You will need to establish a partnership with the construction service company while you oversee the entire project. During the process, you will need to have a thorough knowledge of what materials are needed and how long a specific task should take. You will need to make decisions quickly, taking into account the recommendation of your construction company.

If you need to find a good company, you can check out various construction services groups which usually maintain a list of all their members along with their contact details. Go online and do some research, or ask for referrals from friends or family.

We do hear paving when we talk about driveways or garden paths for homes and even when highways are installed. When newly constructed, these driveways and highways look good in new homes and locations. Incidentally, life expectancy for such constructions can go up to thirty years and above, especially if it was properly done.

Paving Description and Types

When we speak of paving construction, we always think of different layers of materials that comprise them, the manner in which they are prepared and laid down provide strength and resistance to the different types one finds. These layers can be made of sand, rock particles, cement, and many more. In general, paving consists of four layers, but it all depends on the type constructed such that some layers may be less than the others. There are concrete and patio flags, concrete block, clay brick, and permeable paving. There are also special use paving, grass paving, plain and decorative concrete, asphalt paving and resin-bonded paving.

Another way we could categorize paving construction is with the various materials of paving construction. It could be natural or manufactured. Natural materials definitely refer to materials that more or less come in their natural state versus manufactured which points to processed forms of the materials used.

Paving with Concrete and Asphalt

Majority of individual assume that paving means asphalt. However, paving can also mean concrete or more as you’ve seen earlier. Both materials need heavy-duty equipment to finish the job. Installing driveways made of stones that interlock with each layer is a procedure which requires manual labor, which also allows you to create designs as you please. When using either concrete or asphalt, you will need sealants to prevent cracks from changes in water changes that can seep into the pavement such as what you get when water freezes or thaws.

If you want the paving construction to last you decades before it starts disintegrating, care must be taken during the construction. In the case of asphalt paving, it is recommended that both ends are loaded first and the middle should be last to get loaded or installed. Thickness of the loaded materials or layers is also another factor plus making sure that you have a compact layer minimizes early disintegration of the material. No one wants the paving to efforts to go to waste and careful attention to its construction will save you lots in the long run.

If you’re interested in building construction, it pays to do a bit of research first to make sure you know what you’re getting into. One important thing you must know is the different building construction types. The Ohio Building Code classifies all buildings according to the construction type, with Type I being the least combustible and Type V the most combustible. The more combustible a specific building is, the more limited the allowable area is. That is because more combustible buildings are generally more hazardous.

Type I are concrete frame buildings that are made of non-combustible materials. All of the elements in the building – from the structural frame to the bearing walls to the floors and roofs – are not only fire resistant, but also included in the fire resistance rating. Type I structures are commonly found in high-rise buildings.

Type II are buildings that are constructed using non-combustible materials as well. However, the materials may or may not have fire resistance. Type II-B structures are the most common and can be found in nearly all commercial buildings today.

Type III are buildings in which the exterior walls are made of non-combustible materials, but the interior may be composed of combustible elements. Buildings with wooden floors are considered Type III.

Type IV uses heavy timber construction (which is actually not that common in Ohio). Obviously, timber can be burned, hence this type of building can be more hazardous.

Type V are buildings that usually use a wood frame construction. There is no fire resistance in this type.

Aside from the different types of buildings, you should also know how to manage costs in order to get the best value for your money. As you can imagine, building construction costs can be sky-high unless you know how to manage the budget well.

The main goal of managing costs is to evaluate techniques that give a specific service or product with higher value. It could be through the use of technology or materials of lower quality to get the cheaper price tag that goes with it.
